Difference between DBMS and File Management System

DBMS VS File system

DBMS (Database Management System) and File system or traditional file system are used to manage, store, retrieve and modify the data. DBMS (Database management system) is a collection of interrelated data and set of programs to retrieve those data. DBMS provides a interface to user and programmer to modify and manage data. Whereas a file system is a collection of raw data file that are stored in hard disk drive. A file system is a earliest way of managing data but DBMS come after the file system. DBMS is used to overcome some problems that are in earliest file system. DBMS provides much more facilities that are not available in earliest file system.

Difference between DBMS and File Management System

1. DBMS is used for large systems such as oracle whereas; file system is used for small system such as c++.
2. DBMS very expensive as compared to file system. A file system is cheaper.
3. DBMS (Database management system) has very complex structure whereas; file system has very simple structure. A DBMS, database has lot of constraints such as primary key, foreign key etc. 
4. A file system has simple structure, therefore it requires very simple designing while, in DBMS designing very important.
5. A database management system provides better security than file system. A DBMS provides security against unauthorized access. 
6. Most file system supports only single user and DBMS supports multi user.
7. A file system has isolated data while, in DBMS database is shared among user.
8. Backup is easy in file system as compared to DBMS. In file system, backup is easy because only need is to store data in other drives. In DBMS, backup is complex because it need to copy whole structure of databases including primary key, secondary key and so on.
